The Man Behind Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. He was 89 years old.

DeRobert & The Half-Truths - Cop Cars And Taxis

This is a b-side from their Too Busy single released in 2009 (Discogs link). It's just so funky. The rest of their songs usually have vocals, which is fine but I love this instrumental cut.

The Rap Attack - Early Hip Hop Mix

I made a mix of early rap songs, starting in 1979 and moving through the 80s. Featuring Joe Bataan, Spoonie Gee, The Sequence, and The Fearless Four among others.

I also wrote an accompanying article with a bit about each artist. You can check that out here: https://medium.com/the-shadow-knows/the-rap-attack-five-early-hip-hop-hits-you-may-have-missed-10cc41afd5a3

1 Rap-O Clap-O - Joe Bataan
2 Rappin All Over - The Younger Generation
3 Spoonin Rap - Spoonie Gee
4 Funk You Up - The Sequence
5 Monsert Jam - Spoonie Gee & The Sequence
6 Think About It - The Deuce
7 Rockin' It - The Fearless Four
8 Creepin' Up On Ya - Fearless

Music Magazines - What else do you read

I'm really happy Wax Poetics is back, and other mags are either starting or coming back too, like Spin in the US. I'm curious what else everyone reads?

In Australia we have local versions of NME and Rolling Stone, but no national "Australian" music magazine apart from Rhythms. Rhythms is focused on roots music like folk, jazz, and Americana, and it's managed to find a pretty good niche, but unfortunately all of the more general music mags disappeared years ago.

We also had a few free streetpress titles until the pandemic killed most of them off. There's still one available called Mixdown which is good, and looks at most genres, but it is more focused on production and is mostly reviews of gear.

What are mags like where you're based?

On Friday June 18, 2021 Timothy Jerome Parker aka The Gift of Gab passed away, aged 50.

I wrote a bit about his career for a DJ Shadow fansite after hearing of his passing: https://www.djshadowreconstructed.com/post/remembering-tim-parker-aka-the-gift-of-gab
